| Computer not showing stuff on the screen!!
Hey guys, i was putting a new pc together, everything as it is to be pieced, but when i started it, it gave me no sound if the memory sticks were not put in. Also, the video card is not responding and the monitor is giving me its video cable disconnected. It is a amd athlon xp 2600 with a volcano 9 cooling fan. VGA PNY GEFORCE4 MX420 64MB SDRAM VGA & TV-OUT with 2 512mb 5pc2700 ddr ram and one 512mb pc2100. maxtor 120gb 7200 rpm, with a sound blaster live 5.1. the motherboard is a MSI Motherboard for Socket A (462) Athlon Processors w/ LAN. Model# KT4VL. The problem is also that once we put together the pc for the first time, the processor was not with the volcano cooling fan on it. three times was the pc turned on and the beeping sound came on. now, do you think the processor is fried, which i doubt or is the video card or the motherboard. Although, it cant be the motherboard, because the pc starts, it just doesnt display anything, or when started w/o memory it doesnt beep. HELP me please.

these, IMO, are the probable causes listed in order of probability from most probable to least:
1. check RAM. im not sure but i was under the impression that you cannot use two different speeds of ram at once, but not sure, i might be wrong.
2. processor bad/not installed right
3. bad mobo
4. bad vid card/monitor
this is all i can think of, but i hope u get it fixed.
and most inportant, Welcome to TechIMO!!! this is a great site, you will find lots of info and friendly people on here.

is the hard drive hooked up correctly?? try disconnecting everything you don't need to boot up and then try to boot. Try one memory stick at a time...one might be bad . If you can try another video card. | |

richeemxX, sorry, not trying to be rude or anything, really, but i dont think the hard drive would have anything to do with it, it should still POST with no hard drive or a bad hard drive. but the suggestion about memory is a good one

When you throw a system together and get a bunch of problems you need to step back and try to simplify the situation.
So try to boot it with just ram and video card first. In other words unhook all the ide cables etc etc. If you get no vid signal try another vid card. And as was said earlier, mif you have probs try one memory stick at a time.

If the above suggestions have not 'cured' it, you may want to try unplugging everything, except the essential components. Remove the sound card, cd-roms, floppy, hard drives, any 'extra' case fans you may have attached, and leave 1 stick of memory in place.
You may also be trying to draw too much power, not allowing the video card to operate correctly. You don't mention what the Power Supply wattage is, but I would hope it is upwards of 300W.
Let us know what works (or doesnt work!)
(Edit: I guess John Prophet beat me to this suggestion )
