Installing from CD problems

I recently upgraded to Windows XP and I have been having trouble with both my DVD drive and CD-R. Upon installing a program, the computer restarts in mid-install or causes a memory dump. I tried upgrading the drivers for both drives, and checked their compatibility with Windows XP.

Has anyone had this problem before or can someone offer some help?

only thing i can think of is that if they are both on the same ide cable and/or power cable from the psu then maybe one or both are not plugged in all the way. or maybe your ide cable is bad. i know that if the power is unplugged/cut from a component while the pc is on it will usually reboot. check your cables. other than that i dunno...

Welcome to TechIMO

As above plus a power drop can force a restart. Did you add the DVD extra, or is it original machine fitting ?

Has the problem only occurred since you U/G'd to XP ?

I had Windows 2000 on my machine before and never had a restart like this before. No parts have been added since the upgrade, it was all stock from before. I haven't had the chance to check on the IDE connection or power cables yet today, but I'm headed to do that shortly.

Well, after attempting most of the fixes I know to solve this problem, neither drive works yet. I'm still having the restart problem, and that is after pulling the IDE cable, reattaching it, as well as pulling the power from both drives. The DVD drive (master on that cable) won't even work when the other drive is disconnected. I haven't had time to upgrade XP with services packs and patches yet and wasn't sure if that would fix this or not. Has anyone else had this problem occur so persistently? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to TechIMO!

Have you checked your hardware against the Win XP compatibility list?

Also, have you tried installing Win XP with your system stripped down to the bare minimum?

Processor, memory (1 stick if you have more than 1), 1 hard drive (set to CS on its own cable), CD Reading device (CD-ROM or DVD--also set to CS on its own cable), video card (if not using onboard).
Disable floppy in the BIOS of course, disable other "tweaks" in the BIOS as well...for now anyway.

Just my first thoughts...

No, I haven't thought to try it that way, but what makes this odd is that I can explore CDs without trouble. I have Warcraft 3 and have tried repeatedly to install it, but it gets slightly over 50% and then restarts, and it's not even at the same point every time. I'll try the barebones method soon, thanks for the advice
