| XP Home SP1a install problem
Relatively new system running XP Home.
Trying to install XP SP1a this error constantly shows up stopping the install.
see http://dvnt1.homeip.net/help/netinstaller.JPG
Tried clearing temp files & rebooting.
Originally trying via Windows Update, last try was using the Network install version of SP1a.
Same erro rregardless.
Any suggestions? |

I don't think it would a difference, but have you tried just the regular SP1? The only difference in the two, I think, is that Microsoft VM isn't included in SP1a... so I don't think that would make a difference... but hey, when you're stumped... sometimes anything is worth a try =) Including a hammer...
Have you tried the MS Knowledge Base? |

Thanks for your repley kaziah. I have not tried sp1 but I have learned there are other related problems with this machine.
Some other minor updates cause the same error message.
This machine can not add a modem based network connection (actually both modem and PPOE options are grayed out).
After a reboot, RPC services can not be started until the Telephone services are restarted.
I've searched Google and MSKB but no luck so far. The closest answer I've found is simply reinstall. |

I used an SP1 disc from a comp magazine, mainly 'cos my connection speed is so slow,so that method may help.I then "topped up" the SP via the web. As thronka asks what brand of machine are you using? Like ER I couldn't get to your link...
Best of luck to ya |

Dvnt, Have you tried copying the SP from the network server to the local desktop and running it from there?

DVNT1:
Since you're having probs with the other updates, etc., can you use the recovery disk to maybe overwrite, or otherwise fix those files/drivers which may be corrupted, and get your machine running like it should, before trying to install SP1 or SP1a?
Just an idea. . .

Mntsnow: yes, I copied the network install to the local computer and ran the sp1a install from that local copy
bill1971: I was installing SP1a in hopes to fix some previous software problems
At this point, it looks like a reinstall is what I will have to do. in approx. 6~8hrs |
