Question my hard drive sounds like a bee

umm...my hard drive (WD) has started making this buzzing nervous-like sound at start-up and after start-up before i've opened anything yet. once i open up, say AOL...it stops. it only started this after i had an accident where my entire computer slid off the table it was sitting on and crashed into the floor and the closet doors. (the table legs on one end collapsed) amazingly everything seems to work just fine and nothing was broken except for a lamp. the computer WAS turned OFF when it crashed.
this computer is fairly new, as i built it myself this past summer.

i'm not sure what to do...if i need to go ahead and replace the HD or what....any suggestions???

    THANKS!!

Have you tried running DLG diagnostics from WD's site on it? see if it has any problems.

my best guess would be to go ahead and try to backup whatever is on it then get it RMA'd. even if it still works somewhat now, it will probably die soon so u may as well go ahead and get it replaced. WD is good about replacing drives from my experience, they dont send u a new one, they send u a refurbished one, but ive been running a refurb after i had to rma and the refurb has nothing wrong with it. IMO is more reliable than the original. just dont tell them your computer fell off the table!! just say it quit working

    good luck

I'd RMA that thing quickly before it starts sounding like an entire hive of bees and dies

Are you sure the sound is coming from the hard drive?
My friends computer had a similar problem, squeaky/weird noises on startup. After shutting down and letting it cool off, then starting it up again i finaly determined it was the heatsink fan making the noise.. replaced the fan, noise went away. Not sure why it only made sounds on startup, however i presume the RPM speeds were lower b4 it warmed up. Faster RPMs probably helped counter a bad bearing and made the noise disappear

well the key here is you said the computer fell off the table. So my guess is the read/write head is making contact with the disk inside the harddrive. You'll need to replace the harddrive soon.

i KNOW it's not too old cuz i bought it new not even a year ago. i've cleaned it cuz it does pull in a lot of dust...and i've opened it up and it's definitely the HD. i ran the diagnostic and it came back without error. i don't know how to go about backing up everything that's on it...geez that's a lot of stuff....i'll figure that out in my "spare" time i suppose...but i'll have to RMA it i guess...ugh...and i can't be without my computer for another 2 months or so....i hope it holds up until then!! thanks for all the help...i really appreciate it.
