Usually, but not always, the best way to handle it is to remove the device from Device Manager then re-boot the computer. On reboot, Windows will find the device and should install the appropriate driver for it.
You may be asked to insert the Windows 98 CD which may be a problem with a Gateway that uses a restore CD. However, it may not be problem depending on how the CD is set up. I'd view it's directory structure in Windows Explorer first and see if you will have the ability to direct the install to the Windows files on the CD should it be required.
