Wierd Win98 problems
Where do I start? We had a power failure the other day while I was gone and the power was out for sometime. When I booted this one machine it seemed to do fine getting to Windows but then I could hear a faint ding, ding, in the background like when a keyboard key is stuck or your trying to close a window that can't be closed until a primary window is closed first. When I click on the background of the Desktop is stops. However, when I double click on Desktop items most will not open programs and some will open programs but then I can't close them. When I click the Start button, it automatically goes into restart. When I right click on tray icons the menu will not stay up and I can't run my virus program at all. What gives? Is this a virus or something caused by the power failure?

You might have answered your own question.
The might be thinking a key is down when it really isn't. (Such as the ALT, CTRL, SHIFT, or other keys.) When windows boots up, (gently!) mash all your keys and see if it solves your problem.
yes, my solution isn't very technical, BUT, I didn't want to overlook the obvious.

Do you have a spare keyboard to try? Seems most of have piles of them...

Well, go figure. It apparently fixed itself. Now that I think about it, it was acting a lot like a bad mouse driver that I've seen before on a different system.
Anyway, I booted with the anti-virus recovery disk which found no problems and then I booted into Safe Mode and ran System File Checker which didn't find anything wrong. So I set Dr. Watson to start on boot-up and it hasn't found anything and all "seems" to be running "normally" at the present. If it starts again I will update the thread. Thanks for your replies and suggestions.

Sounds like a winderz thing. Sometimes a couple of reboots will fix a 98 machine.Who knows, just the nature of the beast
The impossible takes more time, and costs more money.

I've wasted so much time trying to figure out goofy problems, totally forgetting how much good an old reboot will do.
But I am getting better.
