Unhappy VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY ERROR

Hello there! I first have to say that this forum set is the BEST I have run into...many thanks and kudos to my cable technician for recommending. As I learn, I hope to be able to pay it forward to others.
At this time, however, I have a dilemma I have had no success in resolving.
I am running WinXPPro on a Vaio RZ-10 desktop. (see sig=specs).
Lately Windows File Explorer has been giving me the error : "Application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I have researched MS site to resolve, to no avail. Recently updated Registry upon uninstall of Pinnacle Studio 8. According to MS site, have all current updates for OS.
Have rebooted for changes to take effect several times. No change. Recent successful install of ATI Radeon 9700 Pro AIW & related software.
    Otherwise all system ops normal.
    I appreciate any help...hopefully easy?

Is there any description on the Error (ie: BadDrawTable, etc)?
Also - if you look in the Event Viewer after this happens, does it offer any other information?

You also mentioned Pinnacle and the Radeon card - was this error message occurring prior to the installation of these items?

Another thing to look at: did Pinnacle Studio associate any file types with itself?
If it did, one of two things could be happening:
1 - The file association is still there in the registry, one of the Pinnacle Studio files is still in the list of recent files, and File Exploder is kacking out trying to find Pinnacle Studio. Strange as it seems, the recent files list can cause weird things to happen like spinning the floppy drive if one of the recent files was there.
2 - When you changed the registry after uninstalling Pinnacle Studio, did part of your changes remove file associations? If so, the extension you removed could have been one normally associated with "standard" or "system" files (like .txt, .bat, .doc, etc). If so, you'll need to put an entry for that file extension back into the registry, pointing it to some innocuous app, like Notepad, until you can get back into Exploder and fix the association through it.

    bwcc & uncadanno,
I researched the event viewer=attempted to find some system or app explanation for problem.
    System folder revealed these errors:
Type: Warning Source: W32Time EventID: 36
Time service has not been able to sync system time for 49152 seconds b/c none of time providers has been able to produce usable time stamp. System clock unsync.
Type: Error Source: LStone EventID: 1
**this one appears a lot/over multiple dates**
Description for event ID 1 in source (Lstone) cannot be found. Local 'puter may not have necessary registry info or message dll files to display message from remote 'puter. You may be able to use /auxsource=flag to retrieve this description.
Type: Error Source: DCOM EventID: 10000
**this one appears a lot as well**
    Unable to start a dcom server {7AA13923-FC82-11D2-A9CA-00AA00C7EF04}
    Type: Error
System cannot find the file specified. Happened while starting this cmd: d:\pinnacle\shared~1\filter\server.exe-embedding
Type: Error Source: CCDECODE EventID: 43
Description to event ID (43) in source (CCDECODE) cannot be found. Local 'puter may not have necessary registry info or msg dll files to display msg from a remote 'puter. You may be able to use \auxsource=flag to retrieve description.

Then I checked the application folder in event viewer and discovered this:
Type: Error Source: Application Error EventID: 1000
    Faulting app explorer.exe V6.0.2800.1106, faulting module acroiehelper.ocx, V1.0.0.1., fault address 0X00001af5.
Type: Error Source: App Hang EventID: 1001
    fault bucket: 29370502
3/8/03, same thing, different bucket: 40122543
3/7/03, same thing, different bucket: 39343540
3/6/03, same thing, different bucket: 20467770

Could it be that the registry DCOM error is causing some problems? I totally scraped registry trying to get rid of all the Pinnacle pain....and removed all file associations....if that is determined to be the source of this, how do i put the file ext back into the registry? thanks again...

The W32 Time error - don't worry about that one. But the next 3 errors are your explorer crashes - but I don't know if it's directly related to the explorer crashes. The line you had for your explorer eventID (1000) in the application log also references acroiehelper.ocx - that is related to Acrobat Reader. You may have more than one problem occurring here.

The CCDecode and Lstone are directly related to Pinnacle it seems. I didn't find anything on Lstone, but the CCdecode is part of the closed caption decoder/MS VBI codec - which could have been affected by Pinnacle.

Clear your event logs (save them if you wish to reference them later). Uninstall the Acrobat reader - thru Add/Remove Programs. You may have to manually unregister the ocx file - but let's wait on that. Also look through your Services list - take a look to see if there are any remaining services from Pinnacle, but don't disable anything you are unsure of. All critical windows services are clearly described. After a reboot, look at your logs again - frequently - especially after an explorer crash. You'll want to link times of crashes with events - this will narrow the actual problem event.

I did find one other minut reference to the systems paging file - while I don't think it relates, it can't hurt to check - make sure your paging file (System Performance) is larger than your actual RAM. Windows should take care of this just fine though.

Do you have any other Adobe products installed on this system? What was the problem with the Pinnacle uninstallation that required 'dumping' the registry?

good deal. i uninstalled adobe acrobat. I have not uninstalled adobe photoshop elements or adobe premier yet, mainly b/c I have not used them yet. Have not manually unregistered .ocx file yet. Services was clean, no pinnacle stuff there. System Performance running ok.
I had to get rid of Pinnacle due to a runtime error: Abnormal program termination...happened every time I began rendering a video clip or actually processing anything within the app. thinking this was the beginning of nothing but trouble with Pinnacle, I uninstalled and wiped the registry clean of all associated files.
I also ran sfc/scannow and sfc/purgecache on both my c: and d: drives. all normal there. So then I ran chkdsk on c: and d: drives and the c: drive chkdsk revealed: windows found problems with file system....correcting errors in file system...
That being done, I rebooted and my 'puter runs better, but I still have that dang runtime error, just now all I have to do is open windows explorer and I get the runtime error about 3 seconds later. Now the error says " abnormal program termination".
Using your advice, I checked the logs for evidence of error but found none?!? (I checked them all...system, applications....but nothing...what gives?
    thanks again....

    Whoa

I know this is an older thread but I registered to this BB just to reply to this thread. I also am having the same problems with my XP Home system, I also have an AIW 9700 Pro, and I *also* just uninstalled Pinnacle Studio.... hmmMmMMMmMmmmmmm...

And I'm also clueless about how to get this problem resolved. It happens to me only when I open up a directory that contains videos and that are set up in thumbnail preview mode. I did a registry search for anything that contains the word pinnacle in it and came up with this: "FriendlyName/REG_SZ/Pinnacle MPEG Video Decoder ((DWSource)" located in "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ 083863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{083863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\Instance\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{08 3863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\Instance\{8D0AB116-6BD1-4153-8F3F-800730FED516}"

I really want to delete this regfistry key but I'm nervous... don't know what to do here...

Try updating your Studio 8 online. Open Studio and click on help then software updates. This may help.

I actually had done that before uninstalling it, so no dice. I went ahead and <gulp> did a reinstall of windows last night. There was enough that I wanted to change to warrant the move.

    thanks,

I had the same problems with Pinnacle 8 and unistalled it at the recommendation of Pinnacle's Tech Support. It resulted in the same runtime errors as previously described. The only thing I could determine is that the Pinnacle uninstall program took some of the Windows XP files files out too. I reinstalled the Pinnacle software and the runtime errors have gone away. I've found that working with smaller sections of my films, generating MPEG2 files and merrying them together later helps to reduce the abnormal ending of the Pinnacle program.
