Exchange relay not working

When I try to telent to my mail server using port 25 and send email I get a “unable to relay” error. I set the SMTP virtual server to accept relays from my machine, but I still get the error. What am I doing wrong?

Exchange by default will only relay mail for authenticated users.

This is done by default to prevent your SMTP server from becoming a spam transmitter.

If you use a mail client, configure SMTP to use a valid account on your network.

If you use telnet, initiate the telnet session from a pc logged onto your network.
