system wont standby or hibernate

when i try any of the 2 it says preparing.. then freezes completely.

it's windows xp pro.

My guess is the video adapter drivers won't support it......what kind of video adapter do ya have and do you have the latest drivers/ Windows XP compatable drivers?

i have a geforce 4 mx440 and just downloaded the latest xp/2000 drivers from nvidia's site yesterday..

Have you checked the BIOS? There's usually some settings for power management there. You may have to make sure it's set to "User Defined".

i just checked the bios, and these seemed to be the only power related settings: Restore on AC/Power Loss [Last state]; On LAN [Power On]; On PME [Stay Off]

Just outta curiousity, is it integrated onboard video or a video card and, if it is an add-on card, who manufactured it?

it is not integrated and the manufacture is pny..

yes, this problem did occur before i installed updated drivers. big hint: that's the reason why i reinstalled them.

this is beginning to sound like a tech support call to compaq..
