Give this a look, it appears to be pretty straightforward

if this is XP, then boot off of the XP CD, but instead of choosing install choose recovery. Print out that page for reference. The recovery console will take you to a doslike prompt where you can enter commands.

When you put the CD-Rom in, and then boot up, it may say boot from cd: and then press any key to boot from CD, depending on the motherboard. Watch for that and make sure you dont have to press a Key to boot off of the CDrom. If you have a splash screen instead of the POST just press escape to get rid of that graphic and actually see what's happening.

a boot disc will just take you to a DOS prompt. You may be able to do this if you have your hard drive partitioned in Fat32. go ahead and do "c:" without the quotes and then "dir" see if you see all of your files on the C: drive, if not it may be NTFS.

If it is Fat32 then just go ahead and follow the instructions starting here:

change to the c:\Windows folder.

Type cd sytem32\config , and then press ENTER

If it is NTFS then you may need to find the XP cd to fix things.

Once you boot from the CD, hit "R" to enter recovery mode in Windows setup. Then hit the option for "recovery console" and go ahead.
