if this is XP, then boot off of the XP CD, but instead of choosing install choose recovery. Print out that page for reference. The recovery console will take you to a doslike prompt where you can enter commands. |

When you put the CD-Rom in, and then boot up, it may say boot from cd: and then press any key to boot from CD, depending on the motherboard. Watch for that and make sure you dont have to press a Key to boot off of the CDrom. If you have a splash screen instead of the POST just press escape to get rid of that graphic and actually see what's happening. |

a boot disc will just take you to a DOS prompt. You may be able to do this if you have your hard drive partitioned in Fat32. go ahead and do "c:" without the quotes and then "dir" see if you see all of your files on the C: drive, if not it may be NTFS.
If it is Fat32 then just go ahead and follow the instructions starting here:
change to the c:\Windows folder.
Type cd sytem32\config , and then press ENTER
If it is NTFS then you may need to find the XP cd to fix things. |

Once you boot from the CD, hit "R" to enter recovery mode in Windows setup. Then hit the option for "recovery console" and go ahead. |
