Media Player Oddity

OK, this one has got me stumped as to what to do now.

When playing anything through Windoze Media Player, the sound will jump around. It plays the sound normally, but will substitute a fraction of a second from later in the file in here and there. It's highly annoying and makes it just about unusable.

I know it's not the sound file, as I loaded one on that plays perfectly on my own computer. I know it's not the codec, as it does it with all sound file formats (waves, MP3s, MPGs, etc.) I know it's not the hardware or drivers, as other programs play the files perfectly.

I've tried removing WMP and re-installing it. Same thing. I tried uninstalling WMP, deleting all the leftover files in the WMP directory, then cleaning the registry of all erroneous entries, rebooting, then reinstalling WMP. Same thing. I've tried both WMP 6.4 and WMP 9. Both do the same thing.

Anybody have any other ideas for me to try?

Buggy codecs?

I had thought that, but then the problem would be exhibited by other programs that tried to play the same type of files.

I know this souds odd, but I troubleshot a problem like this, and the culprit was a spyware running unknown in the background and was causing the sound to jack up. Very odd, only really affect WMP 9, bc winamp was fine. But those were the only two testers we had at the time. Is anything else running?

this same thing happens to me sometimes when I have too many prgrams running on the puter

I'll run AdAware on it. There are a lot of file-sharing programs installed, so there's probably about 862,541 spy/ad-ware programs installed too.

I did kill all the tasks except systray and explorer and it still did the same thing though. (Forgot to put that in the original post.)
