| Mandrake 9.1 install issues... Please help
I just got done installing Mandrake Linux 9.1.
Everything seemed to go well, I had the video and audio set up, but when I rebooted, and linux loaded for the first time, it just dumped me to the command line login. No GUI, or anything, and I installed all of them. I'm very new to the linux scene, and am desperate for some help, as I can't even use my computer right now, and I don't really want to go back to XP...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

hi there shaw, welcome to timo, but sorry to hear you're having problems
not to be condescending, but we can help you more if you give us more info Quote: |
I just got done installing Mandrake Linux 9.1.
| what's in your computer - hardware - cpu, mem, graphics, mouse, monitor? Quote: |
I had the video and audio set up
| only in the install or did you ever use it working? Quote: |
and linux loaded for the first time
| I think this answers the previous question, but let us know exactly what you mean
when you get dumped to the command line, is it as "root" (like administrator under winxp) or as "user" - i.e. your personal account?
while you're at command line, what happens if you type
startx
OR
kdm
look forward to hearing more info |

Thanks for the tips...
and sorry for not giving any info... I'm pretty nieve sometimes.
that and the fact that my setup is really old...
k6-2 450
8 gig hd
SB Live Platinum
256 megs
LG burner
and that's about it... Like I said, it's a really old setup, but I still seem to manage to get it to do what I want it to...
the problem was with the video card. It's an old stealth III, and I had it configured as a normal Savage 4.... almost the same, but not quite... The installer supported resolutions that kde didn't want to work with. that's why it was dumping me right back out of kde...
thanks for the quck help though. I may be back with a new post in a bit. Like I said, I'm totally new to linux in any form.
If anyone has any advice on speeding things up when it comes to audio and video feel free to let me know...
I have a SB Live Platinum, and the ancient Stealth III....
To tell the truth they're both ancient, but I still love my SB Live...

That's not THAT old My favorite machine is my IBM Intellistation E Pro that is a 450 mhz with 756 mb ram. Works with Linux just fine. In fact, it's what I do 90% of my work on, even though I have faster machines. It's speedy enough for everything I do. Most people usually have 5 times the computing power they actually need, unless it's for gaming. |
