Ok folks here's the prob...
I get through most of the install and get to the point where I need to restart and get this messgae:
Windows proection error. You need to restart your computer.
C:\WINDOWS\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing unable to load.
What do I do at this point? |

Start over.
At this point, you don't have much into the install, just pull up stakes and call a "Do over".
You could troubleshoot, but I wouldn't.
Post up your system specs. |

I've tried to start over several times only to get stuck/ this issue.
It's on a Compaq Presario lappy 366AMD 96 RAM....
Also have another issue....
I know from a Google search that I need to install Umaxis11.386
installed in the Windows directory but I can only boot to safe mode where a: doesn't show up to install the file from a floppy...

I think you can try these steps.
If that doesn't work, I'd start from square one;
- Format the drive, not a quick format, but a full format
- Run 'SCANDISK' from a bootable floppy and have it do a surface scan
- Try installing again. |

"FORMAT/V:WIN98 C:"
The "/V:WIN98 C:" just makes the volume name of C: WIN98.
You could use the "/Q" switch for a quick format. But by omitting it, a full format is done instead.
How big of a hard drive does this thing have?
Does it have a system partition? Most Compaqs do, but it could have been blown away by "FDISK" a long time ago. |

5 gig HD. I'm gonna try to put XP on it to get around this prob... we'll see if it can run XP. If not it's gonna be a Red Hat 8.0 machine..... |

If not it's gonna be a Red Hat 8.0 machine..... | I think you'd have better luck w/ that. But, Linux is even more critical when it comes to hardware.
If it were me, I'd try the fix w/ 98 first. And, if you really wanted to switch OS's, for that laptop, I'd go for 2K Pro.
EDIT - I had to change my smilie. |
