need help, computer pauses for about a min while installing something or a copy op

guys need help

machine

xp2400
512mb ram
maxtor 7200rpm hdd 8mb cache
w2k

now Im having a very weird problem
it will pause for a min or so after installing something, like I installed a new soft and it will pause at the end, when it says 100% done or somethimes in the middle
also does this while doing a file copy, usually on small files, or a move op

anyone know what is this ? never had this type of problem before (when using my old machine, started happening after installed new hdd and moved the OS to it)

Right off the bat:

Have you scanned for viruses?
Is a lot of new stuff loading at startup?
What new stuff have you installed?

I did the virus scan, clean

did not start doing this after new programm install

but I suspect changing the HDD did it

I swithced drives and I ghosted the first one and put the old os on the new one, probably something went wrong durring ghosting, what do you guys think ?

Sounds like it doing something screwy when accessing HDD for some reason. Might be the ghost did something funny, like messing up the swapfile params. Try checking out swapfile parameters in system config (not usre where they are in win2k - under system somewhere?).

Also, does a defrag help? Or does a defrag take forever? Maybe stuff is strewn all over the drive, and windows is trying to find it all and stuff it back where it can get it easily.

Hope you can fix it. Sounds annoying.

very annoying considering the drive is 7200rpm 8mb cache and its acting like its some 4200 rpm ata33

I'll give defrag a try but Im affraid I might have to do a system reinstall
