Messenger Service windows

Hey gang could someone help me with a prob.

I have had two friends call me recently, with the same prob.
Both run XP Home
They get a bunch of framed windows that pop-up on their desk top while away from their pc
I have seen this but not given it much thought
It's not the typical pop-up the arrives when in IE browsing
but these pop-up to the desk top, sometimes a lot of them.15 to 20 or more

I think the frame says Messenger Service on it

My question is this
Is this a setting in Windows that allows this
Or just another version of typical pop-up ads
standard to XP.

Under your Administrative Tools->Services

Go to Messenger->Right Click->Properties

Change it from Automatic to either manual or disable

Its actually a sys admin feature, which lets you broadcast stuff over your network (Like "Server coming down in 10 minutes!! Log off Now!).

Spammers as usual, found a way to use it to serve their evil needs (using TCP/IP I bet).
