Question
XP Pro can't connect to SSL sites?

I just installed WinXP Pro, and can connect to the internet (obviously), but I cannot connect to any website that uses SSL.

The error I always get is the dreaded "Cannot find server or DNS error". When I ping the name, the ping command will resolve it and ping happily away, so I know that it isn't the DNS server and that the server is up, but I don't really know what else to do.

Any ideas? I have all SSL-specific options in IE 6 turned off, so it isn't checking for certificate revocations. I'm at 128-bit encryption (default).

Thanks!

What are you using to connect to the internet?

I had this same problem show up on a computer not too long ago that crossed my doorstep..

The only thing I can think of is to make sure that the SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are enabled and tls is disabled.. That fixed it in my case...

SammyJ, I'm connected through the university Ethernet connection. I have a screenshot showing a download of Visual Interdev SP5 from Microsoft going at 844kb/sec

AzKidd, the two SSL checkboxes were checked and TSL was disabled (as is default). I checked the box for TLS (so SSL 2, 3, and TLS were all enabled) and it started working.

Strange that it didn't work by default...

Thank you for your idea!
