System Standby Failed

If my machine stands idle for period of time I get this dialog box "Driver for the Communications port (Com 1) device is preventing machine from going into standby. Close all applications and try again. If problem persists you may need to update driver." Anyone know how I can do this.

Do you know which device is on COM 1? If not click START, then select Program Files, select Accessories, select System Tools, then select System Information. Click on Components. A list of devices that are connected to your system appears. When you select a device info about it is listed. If a device is using the com port it will listed in the information. Usually a modem would use a serial port. Is this a notebook or a PC?

Hi Meese
I am using a win XP. I traced this. Com 1 is hooked to IRQ 4, but I don't know what that means. Any Ideas

Sean,

COM ports are ports that are used to connect "serial" devices to a PC. Some times they are referred to as serial ports. Each COM port has an address and an IRQ (Interupt Request). The default address for COM 1 is 3F8 and it uses IRQ 4. The default for COM 2 is 2F8 and it uses IRQ 3. The address numbers are in hexidecimal.
So basically what you found out is that COM 1 is enabled in the BIOS or you would not see the info you posted. But it doesn't tell us if a device is using this port. The COM port is usually a 'D' shaped male connector with 9 pins located on the back of your PC. There used to always be two, one for com1 and one for com2. Now do you have anything plugged into any of these connectors?

Sorry to be so tardy answering your kind, informative reply. My wife is very ill and with trying to run the household sometimes takes most of my time. I do not have anything in either port at this time but hopefully in the near future I am going to try each of them. I will let you know how I turn out. May need further help. Again, thank you.

I have had success with disabling the COM port that is conflicting.
Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, scroll down to Ports and click on the plus sign then right click on the com port and disable it. You can always change your mind and enable it after if you have any problems.

Oh just so you know. I didn't need to disable the com port after I used Microsoft's method.
