laptop powers up.....then nothing

hey everyone, i've been given an old aci amethyst laptop by a friend to take a look at. Trouble is it just sits there on powerup, power led comes on, I can hear the hdd + cdrom spin up but that's it. No beeps and no display.
Not too sure where to go next, i'd appreciate any help guys.

Oh, I think this laptop is also known as a bondwell 5400d, if that helps.

Sounds to me like the video may be shot, either the display or the adapter. Have you tried plugging it into a wall outlet?

i've tried connecting an external monitor through the vga out but no display there either. btw, thanks for the welcome!
