audio won't work on motherboard

I just built a new system using an epox 8RDA+ motherboard. The computer is running Windows 2000. Everything seems to be working fine except the audio. I cannot get any sound to come from my speakers when playing either CD or mp3 files. I have double checked that the speakers work (2 small amplified speakers). I have also looked to make sure no settings are muted and have checked the jumper settings on the board. Any other suggestions?

I tried going to NVIDIA and loaded the newest drivers but this hasn't fixed my problem.

You should have gotten a CD-ROM that came with your motherboard, the correct drivers should be on that CD, have you tried installing them?

BTW, welcome to TechIMO!

I loaded the original drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard and when that didn't work, then I tried the latest drivers from NVIDIA

I just tried booting up in safe mode and when I got to the pop up window a loud beep came out of my speakers (I had them turned up- this is the first sound I have heard out of them since I built the computer). If I try to play a mp3 file in safe mode, a pop up window tells me there is a problem with my sound device. Any suggestions on what is going on

I'm not completely sure the sound drivers will function properly in safe mode. But while you are in safe mode go to the device manager and uninstall the drivers for the sound device. Reboot and try installing again.

Can you help me out with this procedure... when I go into device manager and then "sound , video and game controllers" I see several items: audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, Microsoft WINMM audio compatibility driver, media control devices, NVIDIA Audio codec interface and NVIDIA audio processing unit. Which should I unistall and how do I get the right audio drivers to reinstall.

Thanks

First: While in the device manager, do any devices have a yellow warning symbal next to them? Also make sure to look in the "Other devices" if its there.

Second: I would remove the Microsoft WINMM audio compatibility driver, NVIDIA Audio codec interface and NVIDIA audio processing unit.

Third: Use the drivers that came with your motherboard.

What I find happens sometimes is that even though you just removed the drivers, when you reboot the drivers may get reinstalled automatically. If the audio still doesn't work, remove the drivers again while in normal mode not safe mode. Then pop in the cd for your motherboard. A lot of times it will autorun and a menu will appear with drivers you can install. Choose the audio drivers and let it do its thing.

I hope this helps,

You should have a manual that came with your MOBO, check it to see where you enable your sound , as most boards have the ability to enable/disable your onboard audio/video.
