No such folder named "Logfile\WMI" or file names "trace.txt" exists on any of my XP systems... Anyone else seeing this data on their XP systems? |

Yes, that is where I checked in Windows Explore with the option show hidden files and hidden system files. I also checked through DOS and no such folders or file seems to exist on my XP systems... |

Used the command: tracelog -x at the command line.
And finally deleted the trace.log
Rebooted to check if it wasn't restored and I havn't seen it anymore. | Well, I had the same problem:
Windows XP complained about lack of space on the hard disk.
Found a 3.9 GigaByte (!) trace.log.
'tracelog.exe -x' stops the logging process as you pointed out;
but unfortunately after rebooting trace.log went back to its nasty
behaviour of growing like a (disk)cancer
My solution to the problem: A very simple Visual Basic program
(called StopTraceLog.exe) that runs the command line
"tracelog.exe -x". A shortcut to this miniprogram in the Startup
folder stops the logging process right after booting.
Anybody experiencing the same problem who would like a copy
of the program may drop me an e-mail and I will send her/him a
copy. |

I checked myself if the trace.log on my system was resurected, but it still not on my system. Do you have XP home perhaps? I killed on the pro version and it didn't come back. |

Lucky you!
I have Windows XP Pro V.2002. Originally it behaved Ok. This trace.log has appeared only lately. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I recently used the M.S Windows Update service.

I found the same thing happening on my system... Took me 2 days to track it down - at first I thought it was a virus, but Norton returned nothing (in fact, the log file grows exponentially when you run Norton.. try it, it's fun I'm really interested in what this is, and where it came from... If anyone finds out, please post it here. |
