Yes, I used that bootvis.exe.
I think it sucks. It produced a large log file and did not do much to the bootup time. So I removed bootvis.exe and the log file.

Having got rid of the trace.log by re-installing Windows XP ( for other reasons though) I do not want to find out the hard way if bootvis.exe secretely started the mess...
But I share your suspicion. Would be a great idea of Microsoft's to let you save a few seconds booting time at the cost of filling your hard disk with junk!

I came to much the same conclusion - assuming it was bootvis, but I can't be sure - from reading things here and there it seems to me that it would start this trace.log to find out what's going on with the system so it could optimize it, and then it should shut it off when it was finished with it - the problem was, it never got shut off and thus, the never ending file.... It's just a theory, I've got lots of 'em wanna hear the one about the fast food and the diet industry???

it is definitely caused by BootVis.exe, i have the same problem, deleted bootvis and the log file stayed. re-downloaded bootvis, told it to stop logging, then i was able to delete the file "trace.log" which was previously "in use." however, for some reason the logger keeps turning back on. anybody have an idea about how to keep it permanently off?

I don't have the trace.log file, but i do have the xerox + frontpage folders and am not able to get rid of them. I've never heard of the BootVis.exe [so i've never downloaded it] Is there a way to get rid of these folders? I never got that from the post, just how to get rid of the trace.log file. I don't have a LogFiles folder in my System32 folder either.? i guess that is good.
