"HELP!" NEW XP333-R GREAT, BUT...

Fellow members:

Well, it's after midnight (1AM) in America's Hometown and I must surrender for the night.

First: by all appearances sofar, the Iwill XP333-R, XP 1900+ and PC2700 Twinmos DDR are great. And the SK6 HSF with quiet Sunon fan keeps CPU around 31C. Very fast machine, The POST screen leaves a vapor trail!

The new Maxtor ATA133 7200RPM (40GB) HOWEVER HAS ME BAFFLED! I cannot load Win98se on it. No errors appear on HDD when I run diagnostics on physical sructure. My problem may be multi-faceted...

I do know that I am a nerdo-holic AND I NEED HELP!

I pretend to know so much, but I can't get a new, virgin HDD to work. Is it me or the drive? I FDISKD it, formatted it, booted with Win98se BootDisk, chose option "1" to setup from CDRom, got most of way through loading Windoze from the CD (i.e., copying files), then "Can't Find X-Fle," then "Can't Find Y-File," etc. "Not in Win98 CAB51..." of CD..." I wiped down CD, formatted, started over, FDISKED, Primary DOS partition, Extended DOS partition, Logical partition, re-ran Windoze... pretty much same deal. Anyone attempt a Maxtor like mine? I set CMOS to AUTO on this HDD... most parameters (Cyl, Heads, Sectors, etc) matched or were fairly close to literature. After 5 systems, how does one load Windoze on a new HDD again? I seem to ask on every build...

Please help this wretched soul...

I pray there will be answers when I check Saturday....in a few hours!

One more item: If I want to run a RAID channel as an ordinary IDE, e.g., one IDE device running on each of 4 channels, do I not disable (jumper) onboard RAID? I disabled it and Plextor cabled to one RAID slot, and it was not "picked up." Likely as it's disabled! Do I stll load RAID drivers but configure RAID SW options ... how?

Thx for ANY and ALL help with my multitude of questions!

good morning Brangwen

try setting it at 133fsb. i think the drive can't handle high fsb if the /5 divisor dudn't kick in. then fdisk disk again.

i get those messages when i run my front bus speed too high.

you'll need to enable the raid jumper on the board to get the raid channels working

edit:

Go to KK266/XP-333 FAQ

look in the kk266 section and read up on using the raid channels as normal ide.

personally, i don't know if w98 can load the raid drivers for that mobo. i know that w2k will and you can load the drivers from the floppy by hitting F2 when you see the blue screen.

Thx. My FSB is jumped to 133 and clock is set to 133 in BIOS. Think divider is default. When I first booted system, CPU was reported as 1500+ (it's a 1900+). So I changed the clock speed in BIOS to 133, and it booted at 1900+. Divider I think is set to Default... I'll have to check...

This Revision 2.1 came with November 2001 BIOS.

What's best way to load Win98se on HDD?

Thx for your help... I knew I could count on you.

Whew... I'm up and running... atleast connected to the Net... I don't understand unless I misjumpered my Iwill mobo to 100FSB instead of the higher setting...? I can't think straight to write what the higher setting is... 133? 266? My mind is fairly shot, so suffice it to say 100 vs higher setting.

My computer on Auto detects 1900+ CPU as 1500+... The internal clock is set at 100. I changed it to 133, as that's what I should be running at and CPU POSTs at 1900+.. Sounds and looks right.

But then I couldn't load Win98se at that speed (FSB?). I dropped numbers back to 1500+/100 clock = successful Windoze install.

What am I doing wrong? Wrong divider? I'm confused.

Any ideas out there?

Thx.

No, I double checked... jumpered at FSB133, so I'm going to try 4 divider and setting Clock in BIOS to 133. Don't know why Auto doesn't pick up 133FSB Clock...?
