Copying a disk exactly onto another disk - Possible?

Another Prob:

I have an old disk - ntfs (dunno i think it's about 16 GBs or such) and I have a new one 40GB not formated yet - i know how to format it so there's no prob

I would like to create a mirror of the first one on the second one (you know: copying everything) as i do not want to reinstall the system. So i need an !exact! copy.

I don't want to buy "ghost" just for this one time i'd use it... or any other program. I need some freeware prog or something like that.

I tried to get DRVCLONERXP as it is said that it is a good prog for that but it's not downloadable any longer... it seems to be a prog that copies the disk byte by byte which sounded good - but i can't donload it and the homepage of the creator is now an advertisement for silk flowers

So can anybody help me with that? If possible I don't want to spend money on software just for a one-time-use

Please help!

You're going to put the 40GB into the same computer correct?

There are free utilities available, I won't vouch for their quality or reliability but there are ones available. Just do a search on Google for "Free drive imaging software" or something similar.

Are either of them Western Digital? WD makes a free program that will only work with their drives. It is why I buy WD. I keep unloading slightly old HDDs by selling them to friends and family and cloning their boot disks.

The new HDD should have come with an install floppy that should include a utility to copy the entire contents of the old drive to the new one.

If you're looking for something free go with a HDD manufacturers tool of some sort.

Otherwise I'd recommend Norton Ghost. Fairly easy to use and works flawlessly 99% of the time

Cough up the cash and buy ghost...you wont regret it. I am sure you can find it for less than $10.

the seagate site should have a d/l'able cloning program that should work.

if you PM me your email, i can send you the DrvcloneXP...i've got it somewhere on a cd. i've never used it since i have ghost (so i don't know it it will work 100%), but i should be able to find it...i hope.

edit: found it...available if you PM me...

I think Casper has a demo version. Same as Ghost but you don't have to buy the whole Norton mess.

why can't he just install it as slave and then copy the first drive to the new one, then remove the old one and set the new one to master??

I'm about to do something like that, sorry if I'm infringing on your thread
