BSOD 0x00000050 - Error in Fastfat.sys

Hey all.... Problem here with Windows XP sp1 and I can't find any info in
the knowledge base or anywhere else... it's a real stumper. I'm running a
P4 1.6 and haven't had too many problems up until this week. Getting BSOD
with an error in fastfat.sys after 1 - 5 minutes logged into XP. It can sit
at the login screen and be fine, it can also run in safe mode for hours with
no problem. I have tried swapping out ram and it hasn't fixed anything, and
I have connected all the drives except the main one to see if any of them
were the problem. Seems to me if it was the HD then it would fail in
safe-mode too.

I also get a "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"
in the same BSOD.

I have reinstalled XP, though not formatted yet. I am hoping to avoid that.
I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out... I've scanned with
McAffe, Kapersky and Norton AV and none of them have found anything.
Hopefully someone here has at lease some sort of idea for me.

Regards,

Robert C. Bosworth

the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA is usually associated with RAM. Did you install any new hardware? Video cards can also cause this problem.

Try http://www..memtest86.com and follow the instructions. It's not perfect but it can catch some errors. Make sure you test each stick seperately if you have more than one.

thanks for the reply. I think I figured it out.... I had installed new video drivers a few days prior, so I rolled those back but it didn't fix anything. I tested the ram through a trial and error process swapping sticks with a different computer.... they seemed to be good. Tested the hard drive and thought for sure that was the problem, but before I formatted and did all of that I decided to swap the graphics card. I switched the geforce2 with a Radeon 9500 and it worked just fine. Put the geforce2 into ta different machine and everything is working great. I think the nvidia drivers just somehow went haywire... thank for your help!
