ACCESSING PROGRAM FILES
I had trouble accessing the internet and was told that my XP was possibly corrupt. Had run CHKDSK,etc. Reinstalled XP over my existing installation and it worked out fine. As far as the internet goes.Under "DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS" I have two screen names-the original and a variation of the original.Problem is I cannot access none of my program files. A message comes up to reinstall prgrams. I know the problem is in XP signing on to the new screen name. Any help.

If you did a reinstall over an existing installation, you need to reinstall all the programs you had before. Reinstalling keeps all your files and such, but not programs.

Lol mate, yea hes right you need to re-install all the programs for them to work because of registry etc. etc. But you should still be able to view the actual folders and files. Thats weird, all i can say is that i wouldnt advise installing operating systems on top of eachother, your bound to have some problems so why take the risk? Does it take THAT much to back up your files?

You should have done a repair install. It appears you did a complete install.

Was the cable guy's name Jim Carey by any chance?

What a bonehead diagnosis!
He should be fired/promoted IMO!

The final legacy of the United States will be that in the end liberalism shamed & destroyed the heritage of this great nation. How sad as I see no turning back. When in Rome ..

Installing XP
Problem is I done a repair install (or I think I did) and could not access the internet. Done a complete install, and while I lost my programs, I did get on the internet. Somehow or other the repair left something in the registry that a new install cleared out.
Dunno.

you may have to change the file ownership properties to access them. did you have your folders/files encrypted or set as private?
