I have recently sold my old computer. It had XP on it but the buyer would like 98, I have formated and installed 98 but when I try to load it says "your version of MS-Dos is incompatible with this version of Windows, insert a startup diskette matching this version of Windows" please help!!!!!! |

XP probably used NTFS. You need to remove the NTFS partition. Set your bios to boot from the CD. Then boot to your XP CD like you were going to install it again. When you get to the partition phase, delete the partition or partitions on the disk so no partitions are defined. Then cancel the setup and install win98 on the drive. |

I made sure it was in FAT32 when I installed XP the first time, in case I ever decided to put 98 back on. |

the /S switch wouldn't cause any problems. It wouldn't help, unless you just like looking at a C prompt with no ability. All formatting /S does is copy MsDos.SYS, IO.SYS and Command.Com to the hard drive. Without a startup disk with the CD-Rom drivers on it, you can't install 98 unless you boot to the CD. My recommendation is to format the drive clean if it's a FAT32 partition. Stick the CD in the drive and boot to it.

sorry... i forgot. it formats the drive too, but that is a given. the /S switch does the same thing to the C drive as sys a: does to the a drive. copies the 3 vital files for booting. |

You can do what I said above. It doesn't matter if its NTFS or FAT32. The object is to remove any partitions so 98 can load clean. |

All you have to do like meese said is delete the NTFS partition (probably the easiest to do with the XP CD, but i think the newer versions of fdisk will let you at least delete then). Then boot from a win98 floppy with CD-rom support. When you get to the c:\ prompt just type fdisk
Once in the program its really easy to follow the screens, create a logical DOS partition, exit, then just do a "format c:" command. After that just run setup on the win98 cd |

New version of Fdisk??? LOL. Last I heard there were no updates to FDISK since Dos 6.22 (and maybe even before that).
FYI - To delete an NTFS partition with FDisk (it WILL do it) you have to choose delete (i think delete is 3) and then option 4 is to delete a Non Dos Partition.
But I don't know why NTFS came into this because the guy said that he formatted it Fat32.
Peace |
