OS: MSW '98
My OS was infected with backdoor.coreflood. I deleted and replaced most of the bad files. But, as soon as I solve one problem I seem to encounter 10 more.
My chief concerns involve luvpvwh.exe and gwreg.exe. System File Checker says both files are missing. I tried to extract each of them from the Installation CD, but there was nothing there, nor in the appropriate files on the C:\. During an earlier attempt I extracted luvpvwh.exe via WinZip and thought the problem was solved. Guess not. Now, there is no listing in the directory for it.
There was a luvpvwh.dll file, but I'm fairly sure coreflood created that file and it was deleted. But it seems the .exe file with the same designation was loused up in the process.
System File Checker also advised I had no user.exe, nor msisys.vxd. I did a search and found I had two files for each. In each case, I deleted one. Things seem to be working okay with that. But, how on earth I ended up duplicate files is beyond me.
The system seems to perform okay, though lately at shutdown I've been getting "Program Not Responding" prompts. Once I click-on "End Task," everything shuts down normally. However, my Outlook Express settings now keep changing from the default to Never Dial A Connection. I had noticed last month that when I ran the disc defrag I had problems with OE settings. Why, I'm not sure. Otherwise, blue screens or illegal operation messages are no more than usual--meaning only occasionally.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm into here--and what I might do to remedy these problems? I'm tempted to wipe the "C" (groan), but thought I would seek some input first.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
