Parallel port bios setting Q???

Trying to help a friend get a scanner going and it seems as if the port is dead (it has never been used till now)---in the bios there are 4 settings for the port with spp being the default, there is also epp, ecp and combo ecp-epp---which one do I use???
Its a Boardrunner AT SS7 board w/WME if it matters, any thoughts or am I goin down the wrong path here???

you'll probably need one of the ecp settings turned on so that there is bi-di communication between the pc and the scanner.

Most scanners will work in SPP, EPP, ECP, and ECP + EPP 1.7. However, I 've come across some scanners that don't support EPP where a DMA channel is not utilized...

I set mine to address 378, IRQ 7, Mode EPP+ECP, DMA 3, EPP 1.9. It works great with my Microtek scanner.

Generally, the slower modes are more compatible with a wider range of peripherals. If you're having trouble using ECP or EPP, set it to SPP.

If you have a long cable run and are using EPP or ECP, I would recommend getting an IEEE 1284 compliant cable. The specs for these cables are very tight so signal integrity shouldn't be an issue.

you should probably use 1284 anyways, especially if you're gonna use something that requires bi-di support.

only drawback is the price.

Printers would work best in general with ECP...drive devices such as parallel ZIP and parallel CDROM devices work faster with EPP. If both type of devices are connected to the same parrallel port then ECP would be best...the drive device will just simply work a little slower.

why don't these parallel port guys take a hint and use autonegotiated rates

negotiate with the hardware to determine the optimum mode..

Some hp scanners require you to assign an irq for them. That can be done from the device manager, and lpt1 port.

It is explained in their help files, but their downloads are pretty messed up I keep the old ones in storage for use since the new ones only produce errors and don't really do what they're supposed to do.
