| XP, User Profiles & shared Apps
I have XP with 3 user profiles plus an admin one. I have Office 2000 installed in the administrator profile. The short cuts appear on all ohter profiles.
When you click on one in a non-admin profile (or if you get a program the uses work), I get a "preparing to install" screen. Then it starts to scan, then I get an error, "Error 1706: No valid source can be found for Office 2000...the Windows installer cannot continue". This occurs with the CD in and without. Do I have to install the program on all 3 partitions?
Once again...thanks. |

No you shouldn't have to.
My guess is, its trying to access some information your "user" does not have access to.
Maybe make them admins long enough to finish the install?
I hate that setting up office for each profile, SOOOOOOOOOO annoying!!
In a minor way I kinda understand the purpose of it, but doesn't change the fact that its horribly annoying |

The funny thing is that is why I'm keeping XP. My son (he's three) loves my computer. XP allows me to really lock him down.
I may try the admin suggestion though..thanks. |

Question: Did you installed Office 2k completely to the HD?
The same thing that happens to you, happened to me one time I didn't installed Office completely! Made a complete installation and.. voila... Everything is cool.!!!

Tried changing the profile to admin...still won't complete installing. Thanks for the suggestion. eagle1
In all the choices I had "Run completely from my computer" selected. Thanks. |

Hmm maybe try "Detect And Repair..." from the help menu? Typically its utterly worthless, but doesn't hurt.
I tried that and the repair option from the install but were worthless, but hey its an option |

Copy the contents of the Office cd to a folder on the HD and then when it says to direct it to the .msi file direct it to the one on the Harddrive. The installation will then continue if your users have the correct permissions. |

Hey!!! I got it to work.
Here's what I did:
1. Uninstalled the whole thing.
2. Changed the three profiles to admin.
3. Reinstalled selecting full install for each program. Even the irritating dog.
4. Checked 'em all and they worked.
Now all I have to do is reinstall the service packs.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Y'all are great. Sniff. |
