| What the...?!?! Sound gone!!
Ok...I disassembled my computer to have a peak inside and to clean it out. By disassembling, I mean totally disassembling. Every piece of hardware taken off the mobo, mobo taken off the tray, everything cleaned out. But then when I put the system together and turn on, the computer beeps at me. So I turn it off and check the wiring and turn back on. Still beeps. So I turn off...well, to say the least, I had to do this about 3 times before the thing would boot.
With that done, I proceeded to listen to some music on Winamp. Well, when I tried to play, the thing would give me an error message: "MMSYSTEM002A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system." WTF?! My sound's gone?! So I went into Device Manager and saw that a sound peripheral wasn't even listed. What's going on here with this computer?
Can someone please help me? |

It's an old ESS isa sound card. I put it back in the same slot that I took it out of. |

Are you sure you shoved the card all the way into the slot?

| SPEEDO: I shoved the card in as far as it would go. Sixpac:
My system specs are...
188mhz Cyrix Socket 7
Epox EP-BVPXB AT mobo
3.1 Seagate hdd
1mb Trident vid card
ESS ES1869 sound card
32mb pc66 SDRAM Chef: the system doesn't detect a sound card although I've got it in the slot, so I can't uninstall it. I tried to go Control Panel->Add new hardware, but after installing the sound still didn't work.
Please help!! |

Is the Video Card firmly seated? (Initial beeping and WinAmp makes use of video if animations are displayed, especially in full screen )
ALso, can you hear windows sounds but not a cd? If so, check the audio cable going straight from the CDROM drive to the sound card.

1. turn off computer
2. remove the sound card.
3. reboot computer normally into O/S
4. remove all references of the sound card that you can find.
5. shut down computer and re-install sound card into a differnet slot.
6. start up up and re-install sound card drivers (don't use the ones from the windows CD... get the latest ones from the manufacturer...)
7. reboot and it should work..
edit: (oh and when putting the cards back into their slot make sure you carefully rock them back and forth (carefully) into the slot making sure that you don't damage the motherboard).
Let me know. 6pac

Shutdown, Remove the sound card, Then boot into safe mode and remove any sound devices that are in there!
Just another idea to try!
