Question
By-passing onboard modem DDA module

Either the modem, the onboard modem port, or BOTH is bad on my computer. My motherboard is an AMPTRON PM-598MR and uses a modem DDA module. Since, I don't have another modem that would work with that type of connection, I have disabled the onboard modem.

I have tried a US Robotics 56K Soft FCC PCI Modem, but it is not detected and doesn’t function when I choose it from the driver list without detection. I know there have been problems with this type of modem, but it's the only thing that I had laying around. Has anyone had luck using a different PCI modem with this motherboard? What would be a better modem to try?

(I am running Window 98 SE with 120MB SDRAM and have an AMD K6-2 550 Mhz Processor).

Thank you!

You might not wanna post anymore Topics about the same problem . . .

Anyway, have you tried the modem in a different PCI slot?

Also, did you disable the other modem in the BIOS?

More Details

Yes, I tried both the PCI slots.

There is no setting in my BIOS to disable the onboard modem (I checked because there is a very similar model that does have this option in the BIOS). The only way to diasable it is by changing the jumper settings (which I did).

Thank you.

Before you disabled it, did you remove it from Device Manager? You might be try to remove it now, but might have to re-enable it w/ the jumpers and then try removing it from Device Manger.

If after you get it removed from Device Manger and you have the jumpers set to disabled and you still find it showing back up, then I would suspect there's something wrong w/ either the jumper settings or the mobo. Disabling it should hide it from Device Manger.

Question

I was successful in disabling the onboard modem (it is not listed in device manager and it no longer gets detected when searching for new hardware).

As an alternative to the onboard modem, I tried to install a PCI US Robotics modem. That modem was not detected and didn't work when I selected the driver from the list (I tried using the driver that came with Win 98 AND I also tried downloading an updated version of the driver and using the "Have Disk" option.)

Can this motherboard support a PCI modem?

Is there a PCI modem with a better reputation (i.e. more reliable) that I can try?
