What version of AIM? Try updating it.
Newest version. 5.2.3292
ARGHHH!
It's probably not AIM. It's probably your network or your ISP. At least thats what I think.
first question: how old is your Handle?
second q: are all the computers that youve tried it on been on the same network?
Also AIM is known for kicking off and on again for like 4 seconds. its an annoyign thing but it happens for a while. my handle is almost 4 years old and it jsut about stopped doing that.
Goodness... I have no idea how old this nickname is. I have had it for over five years. I switched to Trillian Pro and it seems to not be happening on that machine. I have not tried the others.
I have three desktops and one laptop on a network. It was happening on all of them. It was also happening to my daughter, but she is in college 5,000 miles away and not on the same network.
well other than running another util to run AIM (such as GAIM http://gaim.sourceforge.net or DEADAIM www.deadaim.com) both programs let you run multiple handles and offer a bunch of features. but AOL still acts funny from time to time. usualy it kicks me off abotu once every 2 weeks. other than that im not to sure what to say
I've just been jumping around the net a bit, since i've been having the same problem with aim just disconnecting and instantly reconnecting....and what i've come up with is this....we all seem to have the following things in common with one another:
1. we're all on broadband, specifically cable modem
2. we're all behind a personal router
3. we're not having any issues with any other online programs at the same time
4. the routers all seem to be linksys wireless routers.
Not sure what to come away from that with, but it seems like we oughta be calling up linksys or the isp and figuring out what the deal is.
just my thoughts...feel free to chime in your own
gooo Trillian!!!!Quote:

It seems from what I could gather, that it implanted itself in the Viewpoint Media Player, which is a set of modules that loads every time AIM starts up. It allows you to view enriched web content and pictures and stuff....basically, i downloaded the original modules so that I could view AOL .art files...but since i really don't have many, and would rather have a working system and some unviewable pics than vice versa, i got rid of the whole thing....this is how i proceeded to do it:
started up in safemode.
(F8 on system startup, or for those with MSCONFIG available, you can go into
the BOOT.INI tab, and choose safemode, then hit ok, and restart the system.)
then I removed the viewpoint media player using the Add/Remove Programs page in the Control Panel.
(START -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS)(classic mode)
i then ran RegCeaner to find any remaining viewpoint registry files, of which there were 3:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\
viewpoint manager
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Viewpoint\Content Debugger
..there was one more, but i can't remember where it was located..
..just use the Find function (Ctrl + F) and type 'viewpoint' to find it..
finally, I remove the program directories, located in several different places:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
there are two subdirectories in each, one for the Viewpoint Experience Technology
and the other for Viewpoint Manager.
I also found a file named Viewpoint.exe underneath here:
[Drive Letter]\AIM95\Sysfiles
I removed all of these items, and have been running normal for a few days now.
If you are not sure that this might be the same problem you are having, then simply change the name of or move the directories, so that the registry entries cannot find the files. then, after a time, if something undesireable happens, put it back the way it was.
In the end, it was Norton that actually helped me figure it out. Internet Security showed me that Viewpoint was trying to access the internet suddenly, after being installed for 2 1/2 years without ever trying to before now. Alarm went off in my head at that point.
As I'm really not positive if it was a trojan or not, I won't say for sure either way, but if you are interested, Tauscan and The Cleaner are two programs that have worked well for me to search out and destroy trojans on my system.
One last note. I was unable to find any dlls to unregister, but if anyone else finds any, let me know.
thanks and happy hunting.
