2600XP Question

I just installed a 2600XP CPU on a new MS-6590 Delta V.2.X motherboard. When I checked my clockspeed, I found that it was only 1.25Ghz, instead of 2.13Ghz. I attempted to rectify the problem by changing the fsb setting from 100Mhz to 333Mhz in BIOS, but it won't let me set it beyond 280Mhz. When I set it to 266Mhz, I couldn't restart my pc at all. I had to take the battery out of the mobo to return BIOS to it's default settings.

The manual says the VIA Apollo KT600 chipset supports 200/266/333 and 400 fsb.

The FSB for the CPU and memory to North bridge is multiplied X2. You need to set it at 133Mhz in the BIOS to run the CPU at 266Mhz. Then set the memory bus at 200Mhz to run the DDR 400 Mhz at stock speed. Any setting over that is overclocking the memory. Why didn't you get an Athlon XP 2600 333Mhz CPU?
Running the FSB that asynchronously may degrade performance significantly.

if you have a 333mhz xp2600 set the fsb to 166 . if it is a 266mhz xp2600 set the fsb to 133 .

as wallie stated it uses a mulitplier of 2 so 133X2 =266 or 166X2 =333. you will never get it to boot if you just try to set the fsb to 333 even if it would go to it .

I increased the SDRAM clock speed to 200Mhz, and the cpu fsb to 133. I now have a cpu speed of 1.67Mhz. Windows says I am running a 2000+ cpu.

Can you give me further advice?

it should be running at 166 and for the best performance run the ram at the same speed as the cpu .

I increased the cpu fsb speed to 166. Windows now recognises it as a 2600xp cpu, - 2.09Ghz.

When I boot my pc, it displays a "DRAM 266Mhz" message when it detects my hardware.

Is my memory running at the desired speed?

no it should read 333 what do you have the memory set at ? i have not used a kt600 chipset board so i am not sure what the memory setting says or how it looks in the bios . it should say 100% or syn .

Marketing keeps doubling the MHz figures for DDR RAM. Besides being all wrong, it confuses users.

Your CPU bus speed should be set to 166 MHz, your RAM bus can run at 200 MHz or below. Going below the CPU bus clock is not advisable, going above may or may not give you a bit more performance. That depends on what your applications are.

So, you should have 166/166. But if the board refuses to set your "DDR400" RAM (200 MHz actually) even to above 133 MHz ("DDR266"), then I'd question whether this actually is DDR400 RAM.

that will work , it is just in some boards you don't get a performance boost by haveing the ram faster than the cpu speed . it is sometimes slower in benchmarks . you would have to benchmark it at 400 and at 333 on the ram to see if you get a boost outta it is all . but you should be fine at 200 which = 400
