do i just burn that folder to a disk? or how do i do it?? i am having ALOT of problems with my windows so thats why i think its better to reinstall everything.
would it be better also to upgrade to win xp?? if i do would i need to upgrade usb drivers o any other hardware??

If you are having "ALOT of problems with my windows " I think you would be better off starting all over from scratch. Copy/burn any data files you want to save. If you have any possibility of virus infection, then I'd suggest zero-writing your hard drive, then re-partitioning and reformating, following by installation of WinMe from the original media CD. www.bootdisk.com is a good place to get whatever boot disk(s) you might want.
The manufacturer of your HD almost certainly has a utility you can D/L that will zero-write your HD; you can also use the FORMAT command to do a zero-write: Quote: Orignally posted by sfw1960
"http://members.aol.com/axcel216/secrets.htm#FORMAT-U
# FORMAT drive: /U [MS-DOS 5.00 and above ONLY]
FORMAT drive: /U performs an UNCONDITIONAL format, which DESTROYS every byte of data on ANY hard disk/floppy by overwriting it with zeroes (hex F6h).
WARNING: ANY disk(ette) formatted using /U canNOT be UNFORMATTED!" | Regarding migration to WinXP... again, I'd start fresh with a clean hard drive. XP offers very good integrated support for USB devices. XP is more demanding of hardware... so if you've got an old, slow box you may be better off sticking with W9x OS.

copy that win9x folder to a disk.
make a boot floppy from control panel "add/remove programs" "startup disk".
Put the disk with the win9x folder in your cd drive.
Boot off the floppy....I think it adds a temporary drive when it boots....so after it finishes booting I think your cd drive will be drive E: so....
When it boots it will be on a flashing A:\
so type
A:\ format c: /q that will format the c:\ quickly....it will ask you if you are sure etc and it will ask about a volum ename etc...you dont have to give it a name...so just follow the instructions of what it tells you
e: that will get you to a flashing e:\
E:\cd win9x that will put you inside the win9x folder
E:\setup that will start the setup
The only thing id be worried about is making sure that win9x folder has all the files it is supposed to. Id be more secure in this case if you had the WinMe disk.

Reinstalling Windows ME I couldnt think of a worse act. Move on to XP. ME is a disaster. Good luck by the way JMICHNA has given
you some sound advise. Darkheart, No one has asked for your personal opinion regarding Windows ME. Tech support was requested. Nothing was added to this thread with your inappropriate negative remarks.

I love the way people like to spend someone else's money around here. Maybe the guy doesn't have $100 for XP!! |

I was going to post the same thing, till I realized he asked about the upgrade. But yeah, thats sort of a pet peeve of mine...people ask a detailed q about one thing...everyone post the answer to something totally different, lol. |

ME works fine for systems where it's the original OS. In that machine, XP would probably be an improvement, but you'd also need to consider how much hardware and software you'd need to upgrade. So an XP upgrade might actually cost you a lot more than $100. |
