File menu missing in Word 97 - Help!

I was told that the demons would go away from my school if I fixed one of their computers. The problem is with Word 97, the File menu is missing and I can't seem to be able to get it back. Anyone know how? Google turned up nothing, so I resorted to asking the masters at TIMO.

Haven't used Word 97 in a while but the first thing that comes to mind is simply re-doing the setup from the Office '97 install disk, assuming you still have it.

BTW - have you ever tried opening up a Word 97 doc and typing "unable to follow directions"? You then select it and do a grammar check on it to see what alternate suggestions Word comes up with. On some versions, the results are quite amusing!
Some programmer at Microsoft was being funny.

It's 'winword /a' or 'winword /c' or something similar...

What do you mean by that??
Also, it's a school computer - I don't have the install disks.

Please clarify your question. Do you see the word File, but there is nothing listed under it? Or is "File" missing from the standard menu?

I'm using 97, so I can try some things.

You run word with the command I said.
Eg. Start->Run->winword /a

You don't need install disks.

Have you tried the universal fixit for all MS Word problems, deleting your normal.dot file?

Right-click in the Tool Bar area, pick Customize. Look in the Toolbars tab and make sure menu bar is checked. If it is, then highlight it and click on the reset button on the right. If that doesn't work try what osprey4 says, that should clear all settings. Only thing about that is if you have custom macros set up it will kill them.

I'm not sure you can turn off the menu bar.
