from VIA to NForce 2 mobo, XP no work
Old Shuttle mobo with VIA chipset died.
80 GB HD with several paritions has dual-bootable Windows 95 and Windowx XP installed.
Via 4 in 1 chipset drivers installed on HD from 2002.
Drivers for GeForce GTS-2 card, dead, still on HD.
Got new working Shuttle AN35 Ultra mobo (whew)
Getting XP2500 Barton CPU (1600XP in coma)
Got Dane-Elec (Nanya) PC2100 CAS 2 512MB one stick
Got Gainward GeForce 3 Ti200 and Tnt 2 cards available....
Got another box running Windows 95B, K6-400, 48MB RAM that I could use to plug in another HD.
Got Partition Magic, Maxtor utilities, Nero available
Questions:
1.Can I do a new install of XP onto my 80GB HD off of the "new" box assuming working BIOS, floppy and CDROM and CDRW drives without having to reformat the HD?
2.Could I stick the dual booting OS HD onto my old box and use my VIA CD to strip out the old VIA drivers and then install the nVidia chipset drivers off of another CD?
3. Or do I have to reformat the HD?

Seen this question 3 times today, lol. They always recommend a fresh install when you change boards with Windows XP..but, as in your case, you cant always do it.
A guy today had same issue...what he did was just slap the new board in....XP wouldnt boot in any mode....but he could boot off the cd so what he did was a "repair installation"...not the first "repair" option cuz thats the recovery console..let it detect the windows xp already installed and then choose repair for that install....it worked for the guy today.
question 2..strip out old drivers? I doubt it."Even a fool is thought to be wise if he is silent"

Thanls John,
I found this on a search engine and looks pretty thorough.
I'll try to piggyback my CDRW and HD as a slave onto my old systen and see if I can backup my files on CD-Rs as well.

Not sure youll be able to access those ntfs files from a win95 system....with norton ghost you could clone the hard drive or copy it to a spare drive..then if the swapover failed and you had to reformat you could then throw the cloned drive in on the secondary ide to get your data off of it.

/dev/rhetorical,
I was looking at your post and noticed the ram you intend on running, You should check it out, its not on their compatibility list(your board) Reason I noticed this, there has been a trend developing lately with system problems, the common factor was elixir/nanya ram.
elixir/nanya ram compatibility page
Hope you dont have probs, but if you do, this would be the first area I would look at.GA 7n400pro
XP2600m 12.5x200=2508.
Chaintech 6600 Agp 256mb
WD40,WD80,WD120 and Samsung 200 GB

Do a repair install. It will keep all your files and settings, just get rid of drivers and service packs.
