It's a PC I built. Okay, let me try to explain:

I installed a copy of XP but didn't have the "key" number. So it's past it's 30 day limit. I bought and OEM full version XP. Can I use the key from this new one on the currently installed copy? Or will I have to install again?

more than likely you will need to reinstall

it would be better if you reinstalled, for various reasons

If the one you installed is an OEM version of XP, then the OEM # should work. If its a retail version thats installed, then you would need a Retail Key #.

it is really quite simple...the installation ID which removes the 30 trial is generated form the product key and a hardware identifier.

since you already installed xp on the machine, activation can occur BUT it will register the product key of the initial install. you cannot use the product key on the CD you just bought to activate the expired version already installed.

you have 2 choices:

1) reinstall xp using the OEM cd you purchased.

2) activate the expired install currently on the drive
