Hi all,
I recently upgraded my computer from 98 to XP. I backup all data using Win 98 backup and transfered to another computer which uses XP. I can not open these files unless I am in 98. SO.. I need to put 98 back on one of the computers. I have tried it with the Win 98 disk and I have down loaded a bootable disk. I have managed to get the computer into DOS mode but I dont know where to go from here. Could someone please help me.
Thanks

1. insert the 98 setup cdrom into the drive;
2. you go to the cdrom drive (d:\ ,enter)
3. type in the prompt 'setup' then press enter. (d:\setup ,enter)
(if setup.exe is not in root directory, you have to browse the cd
and look for it in the folders)
4. if setup starts, just follow the on-screen setup instructions for win98 installation.
good luck

Hi Dax,
Thanks for your reply. I tried that and it says"You cannot install Windows 98 while running this version of Windows. Start your computer in MS-DOS mode and than install 98" Problem is I dont know what to do when its in MS-Do0s mode.
Thanks

Hi all,
My computer is now sitting in MS_DOS. When I typed setup.exe it came up with "Cannot create a temporary drive. If u have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to creat an MS_DOS boot partition to set up Windows"
Question::: How do I do this?
Or Is there an easier way to go back to Windows 98?
Thankyou |

i think you cant run windows98 setup over windowsXP. if you want to dual boot, that will be another complicated task..
if you want windows 98 installed, you should install it on a clean formatted drive.. sorry it wont run under XP or with XP running. |

You may have to delete ntf partician using your winxp disk.
Then reboot to your win98 boot floppy, run fdisk and creat new dos partition. Then re-format. |

just a suggestion, use a different pc (win98) and restore all your data into it. then maybe you can use any file transfer media (LAN, USB link) to transfer all your data files to the xp machine. |
