Can't open IE

Hello, I was wondering if anybody can help me out.

I am working on a Windows 98 SE OS 224 MB RAM, Intel Pent Processor with IE 6 installed.

When I try to open IE, it gives me an error stating that MIE has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have tried to re-insall the program from the micorsoft site with no luck. I have also tried to run the "repair IE" program with no luck at all. Right now I have to use Netscape in which Im not too happy about.

Any help would be great! Thanks.

I think I'd start by running Ad-aware and Spybot. Then follow up with a virus scan. All with up todate definitions of course. Some of the stuff floating around can easily corrupt files, and IE is a favorite target.

Thanks for the reply. I ran both problems and it cleaned up some cookies in the registry files. I also updated my version of McAffe and it found several viruses in Java script files. I clean those up, re-installed IE and I am still getting the same message. Any other ideas? Thanks.

How did you attempt to reinstall it? Did you modify the registry first to trick Windows into thinking that it was uninstalled?

BTW, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

Hey Mike and thanks. Actually, I just re-installed the same iesetup.exe file to overwrite ie I already had installed.

I was just playing around my my internet settings, and reset all to the default settings. After I did that, I was able to bring up IE!!!! I guess after the clean-up of the registry files and viruses I had, all I needed to do was to reset the settings.

Thanks for all the help!
