xp problem

running xp and when i restart the screen goes black computr still runs and stays like that till i hit the reset . i just install a netgear dsl modem, could that be the problem? the tech at the phone company said try this one some times xp don't like certain modems!! that got me thinking. over all it works great except for this restart thing. any help would be great

How do you know everything else is working good if the screen is black. anyway, did you try unpluging the modem?? Have you tried safe mode? How far does your computer get before the screen goes black?? Do you get to the windows xp boot screen? How about the bios screen?

what i mean is the computer works fine, except when i click restart it says windows is shutting down and the monitor shuts down but never restarts.
