I just put together a 486 DX2 for my nephew, and all went well, but upon reboot, and finalizing settings, the CD-Rom can't be found. Booting in safe mode shows it, but regular boot doesn't. It's an AST from walmart about 5-6 years ago, and all parts are stock except the HDD. But all from different machines. (I had 2 Of them), anyway. HELP!!
486 DX2
16MB Simm Ram
onboard Video/sound
14.4 modem
Torsian 4x CD-ROM
Win 95 b
The lights come on when the try is opened or closed, and it will work if booted from floppy, the driver is loaded then I guess.
Now I am reinstalling winderz again, the first time I used a 48x I had here, and then installed the 4x, maybe that is where I lost it.
Any Ideas?

Not sure if this will help, but go to safe mode take out all the drivers out and then re-install the drivers for the CD Rom.
Sounds like a driver conflict to me.

Someone else will be along shortly for more advise. |

Standard issue crap with Winderz 95
The first time or two after a new install it will NOT see the CD-ROM, then as if by magic, it appears..
The DOS driver is available at several spots under a W98 Boot Disk
named MSCDEX.EXE
I always use a 98 Boot disk and have the same issue as you, boot it a time or two more and see if it don't appear. |

Evne though it doesn't show in Windows Explorer..does device manager show it? If so then go into the properties of the drive in Device Manager and manually set a drive letter at the bottom to a higher unsed letter. I've noticed older ver of Win95 sometimes allow a drive letter conflict. |

Could be that Win 95 doesnot support this CDrom drive. Do a n add hardware and let windows detect the driveand see if it finds it

As DOC sez, this is a standard W95 bug. At least a second reboot is required before all the HD controllers are properly installed. |

I had an AST 486/33 with this problem after doing a clean install of Win95. The only solution was to install the real mode drivers. It had something to do with the IDE controller not being compatible with the Win95 drivers and I couldn't find an AST driver for this dinosaur. Anyway, I only set it up for my son to have his own computer so running with real mode drivers was no big deal.

I run into that prob. all the time at work, old computers & Win 95.
Creating the bootdisk is always a pain, try to find the drivers for a 4X Torisan on line
and yes not only do I have to cook but I have to keep all the machines on a Novele Network happy!
