Making first website

A friend of mine wants to make a website that he can upload video files to for friends to download from instead of us trying get them through email, some files are just too large. I have a basic grasp of HTML but still not enough to do this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Some good tools to look at are:

Microsoft Frontpage (good for beginners)
Macromedia Dreamweaver (my favourite)
Adobe GoLive

With these tools you can start building a website, they are fairly easy to use.

In your case you will need a site that allows you to upload files either through HTTP or via FTP.

This will depend on what webhost you have or wish to get.

Video files are very large so you will have to find a host that allows for a lot of traffic.

Cheers!

Do you want to spend money on a host?

I pay about 100 bucks a year for my host, I get 1GB of webspace and 30GB of bandwidth.

There are cheaper or free alternatives, with varrying kinds of service.

Thanks for your replys.
ClubMed, I have FrontPage 2003 already, haven't played with it much though. Would 1 GB be enough space or can you get more at a reasonable cost?
Beemer, that is what I was wondering most, about the webhosting part, he would upload his files to their server or should he just build his own server?

He'll have to weigh out the costs comparison of each. Same problem. His ISP will charge for traffic as well. Get him to call his ISP and ask for the different packages offered.

The only draw back to having his own server is that if he sticks to his regular bandwidth & 2 friends log on to download movies at one time, the downloads will be slow. Add a third party downloading and you have really slow download. If you want to go online yourself at this time, you'll think you were on dial-up.

He'll have to get donations from his friends either way unless he is a philanthropist.

Cheers!

Thanks much Beemer. Basically, either way the money needs to go with the website bandwidth requirements because even with his own server he still needs the bandwidth right? So building his own server is just an added cost?

If he has a broadband connection already it is likely he would not have to pay additional money (although speeds may be relatively slow).

As another option, there are a few relatively free sites out there that host video. Here's one specific to extreme sports http://www.eengoedidee.nl/
