Setting up a secure site?

I will be needing to set up a site, in which the consumer will need to be able to securely pay us with a credit card.

I do know PHP, and a shopping cart is not needed. I will customize the site how it needs to be.

How can I secure the information being sent?

You'll require SSL certificates

I wouldn't touch a SSL site with a 10 foot pole if the cert isn't signed by a trusted authority as well.

VeriSign is pretty much another evil empire that cares nothing about customers... but they are the most popular trusted authority.
There are others but way too tired to think at the moment.

Note that an SSL certificate will cost you a pretty penny. You really should look into a third party billing agent such as ibill, ccbill, or many others. Even paypal if applicable.
