What database access do you plan on using?
SQL Server? MySQL?

Assuming you are using IIS?

The typical for ASP.NET is to connect to sql server or access (depending on your requirements) and connect via ADO.NET.

Picking a language would be a good place to start, easier to recommend books etc. C# would probably be my choice for this sort of thing if the rest of the components are MS based (IIS etc). Given a completely free hand I would consider Rails (an open source web-application framework for Ruby) and Postgres for the backend.

Dont worry too much. Although ASP.NET can be a pain in the butt sometimes its quite easy. I was able to easily create an online shopping cart in ASP.NET (using Access but DB prog doesn't make a big difference besides the obvious being the correct driver) within 3 weeks and I was a n00b. Of course, it depends upon the complexity of the POS system you plan to run. I'd be happy to help if ya need it. PM if you'd like.
