Eduate this dummy on object oriented programming

So I decided to crack a book on php today. It went into depths on the subject of object oriented programming. However the disclaimer was that oop was an after thought in php4 and doesnt function quite like it does in C++ or the other major languages.

The book made a mess out of the lesson and left me confused. So how about giving me a primer?

You could probably do worse than taking a look at Programming Ruby. Obviously it is targeted at people who wish to learn Ruby but I think it could still be useful to you, plus Ruby is a pretty cool language should you feel the desire to pick up something new. Trying to get your head around OOP in PHP4 is probably not going to be the most fun you have ever had, but as ever YMMV.

Programming Ruby has been recommended before. I took a second glance at the text on php classes and my brain puked.

I suppose Ill either read about ruby or C++

If you are having trouble with PHP do NOT start reading C++.

Ruby might be better for you.
