Another PHP / Logging Question

I want to be able to tell from which town (or state) the user that is viewing my page is from, without asking them.

Is there a legal way to do this, preferablly with PHP?

you could use WHOIS queries to the IPs logged to your server, but you'll probably get the address of their ISP at best.

Many router/firewall distros have this capability built-in but I'm not sure about how to set it up to actively log it.

Look into GeoMind MaxIP. They have a database of IPs and locations.

Also, most log tools will give you the country.

Oh, $20 / 50,000 isnt bad. that will work out to about $20 a month, and they have already made 350 in the two days the site i made for them has been up, as well as 2500 hits, so ... should be set.

Thank yuo!

If thats $20 per 50,000 lookups, be warned. If the site gets hit hard, you can do that in less than a day. Just keep an eye on it so you don't get hit with a huge bill.

The obvious follow on to this question is, what do you plan to do with the information? If you haven't worked that part out then don't bother.

The owner of the site (Athol Daily News, Inc.) was to be able to tell from what town the visitor's are coming from.

Price really isn't a problem, par say, as the site is subscription based.

The tech guy that has contracted me, wants to show to his boss that people outside of the regular subscribers are visiting the site (not nescaraily subscribing).
