In that case your should be able to put a test.php file in your /var/www/htdocs dir and access it via http://localhost/test.php

You should find the same line in mod_php.conf file which suggests that this is not necessary.

You may need to change a line from
Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews
to
Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews ExecCGI
in the <Directory "/var/www/htdocs"> section.

It is most likely because the server status page is not enabled in httpd.conf or is at an unexpected path. I believe that is what it uses to check on the server.

hmmm, might need to see the error lines for the specific php file you are trying to open.

That is my error. Im assuming the file is in the right place (/var/www/ folder which is the DocumentRoot as stated in httpd.conf) and that it is just the apache server, although the php commands are all uncommented in the httpd.conf file. Could it be something in php.ini (is that the php config file?) or should i direct my efforts solely at apache

Nah, this almost looks like mozilla is acting silly. Try Galeon or Konqueror or Netscape instead. Even try links or lynx at the command line.
