password protection scrips

I'm interested in a script that will allow me to password protect a webpage on my website. I'm also looking for a script that will password protect a directory on my FTP server, I've been reading abit about apache server .htaccess.

Any suggestions ?

.htaccess is the easiest way to go.

I'm having a bit of trouble with that .htaccess script

The first half I understand but then I'm not to sure about the second half, could you break it down for me ?
