| Streaming video on my site
How do I go about streaming video on my site. I figured out how to embed video, however. I don't want the person to be able to easily get a copy of the video I'm showing. I'm quite an amateur at web building, so keep this in mind with how you respond. Thank you. |

Try shoutcast maybe (winamp streeming) can pass protect that way I believe. + its VERY hard to capture from winamp. Only thought I have on it. I need to figure this out my self. Im planning to host a TON of nitro rc videos. I have my own huge off road track-website- oO only logical to host some cool videos! The only thing is I was told 10gb wasnt enough! I find that hard to believe. Its that or a watermark on the video's to protect your work. (shutters ugh.) |

I'd say your best bet is to use WinAmp streaming (like Xtreeme suggested). Your other options are to do Windows Media or RealPlayer streaming videos which are bulky and unreliable. Your last alternative would be to use Flash to stream it. But then you'd have to know Flash. Here's the Nullsoft Streaming Video Forum (WinAmp). You can get a lot more useful info there. |

I use adobe premiere pro and I can compress a 5 minute video to about 10mb at 30fps. You can see the video quality here. http://www.laphotopro.com/standingta...o/nickwm9.html
I know you won't need 10gb. I'll look into winamp. It's new to me. Thanks for the replies. |

If I use winamp, then anyone who watches it has to install that program right? If I use flash then anyone useing a current browser could watch isn't it? |

| When they say 10GB, I don't think they mean storage space but rather bandwith. I mean, 10GB will hold 2 full DVDs. But for bandwith, each user that watches a 10MB video will use 10MB of you bandwith. Some host don't put a quota limit on the bandwith usage. But say you've got 10 videos on your site, each 10MB. Now assume you get 1GB of transfer per month. If 10 decide to watch all ten of your movies, that 1GB of your quota already used. And if it's streaming, each time they watch it uses up that bandwith again. So if 5 people watched all 10 videos and said, "Hey, those were cool, I'm gonna watch them again...", then there goes you 1GB of bandwith for 5 people. Realistically, most hosts will provide about 5GB of transfer bandwith a month. And you really don't want to go over your quota. Some hosts will charge you like $100 per extra GB of badnwith per month. If your host doesn't provide you with enough bandwith to realistically accomplish this, you might want to look into PowWeb ($7.77/month). They provide 2GB of storage and 5GB transfer per day. Or Dreamhost ($7.95/month), who provides 2.4GB storage and 120GB transfer per month. Both hosts are very reliable and have excellent customer service. I have about 20 client websites on PowWeb and about 30 on Dreamhost and have had very few issues with them. I host a lot of my client's sites on my own server but really high traffic sites go to PowWeb or Dreamhost because I just can't compare with the bandwith they provide. Their connections are really fast too. I can usually download at about 300-320KB/s. Quote: |

| They would have to download WinAmp. Also, for their browser, they'd have to have downloaded Flash. And depending on which version of Flash the files are compiled for, some users may have update their version of Flash. And doing streaming videos in Flash isn't all too easy unless you buy software to do it. You might want to look into Wimpy AV Player - $30. There are several other good pieces of software but I've seen some impressive stuff done with Wimpy and it's really easy to use. |

"When they say 10GB, I don't think they mean storage space but rather bandwith. I mean, 10GB will hold 2 full DVDs."
The webmaster actually meant storage. Which is what baffled me. He runs a photo and home video site. I told him I have 10gb storage and 400gb transfer a month. And if that was enough based on his experience. He said Id need more storage-hahaha. I'll see but Im with you guys so far. I cant understand how Ill need more. With divx, windows media, and winamp its insaine to need that much. That easily 500 minutes worth of storage! Those host are NICE. I got 3 months left on this server@ $15 month... I may switch. I book marked them. Thanks! Specially PowWeb! $95 for 1 year +6 months free. Thats the best Ive seen!

The only thing I know of that has true built in browser support is windows media files. But they will need a up to date IE if you use a newer wma type. The new ones do have content protection built in come to think of it. Try version 10. Do a film and protect the content make the license run out in like 2 days or somthing. THen they have to get it from your site. Not just dw it and share. I think thats how it works. Never used it myself. |

| Interesting... If you were distributing DVDs or pirated videos, then maybe you'd need more storage space Well, as far as storage space is concerned, it's not gonna affect your ability to stream videos. It'll only limit the amount of videos you can upload. |
