GoDaddy.com

Does anybody know how to use Godaddy.com for obtaining their domain names. I need to know the way to you can redirect your ip to actual home based computer for a web server.

I found the total DNS mangaer, and I set the domain name to my home ip address, but what about the DNS name? Is it my ISP's DNS address? If anybody besides me is doing this let me know.

I think GoDaddy has a feature where they will redirect the domain you buy from them to your home machines address... but what they can't do is actually change the DNS record to go to your computer... unless you have a nameserver setup which I dont think you do.

So basically, if you want them to chnage the DNS records to go to your machine, you will need a nameserver, something I've never done but plan to.

But if you just want them to redirect the domain they will do this for a small charge (at least they did when I used godaddy). Its hidden somewhere in your domain options after you purchase it.

Godaddy will do DNS for you for a fee.
You register your domain name with godaddy for $9 - $10/year. Then, goto a free DNS site - like afraid.org and setup DNS with them. Once that is done, you will be given a set of name servers to link your domain name to the IP address. Go back to godaddy and plug in the name servers.

Using afraid.org, you can also use port mapping and dynamic dns, if your home ISP gives you a non-static IP address and blocks port 80 incoming traffic.

Godaddy's redirection service is free (has been for over a year or more). You can have a straight redirect to another url or a masked redirect that will keep your domainname.com in the browser's address bar when the visitor is redirected. Both types of redirect are free. (Masked redirect used to cost a small fee but not now).

Using a redirect is probably the easiest way to do what you want.
